Heritage Sites We Cover

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Sigiriya — the Lion Rock — is Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient rock fortress rises 200 metres above the surrounding jungle and was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD as a royal palace and fortress.
As you climb the 1,200 steps to the summit, you’ll discover the world-famous Sigiriya Frescoes — beautiful paintings of heavenly maidens that have survived for over 1,500 years. You’ll also pass through the impressive Lion’s Paw entrance and the stunning Mirror Wall.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Sri Lankan countryside — lush green forests, distant mountains, and ancient reservoirs stretching to the horizon.
Sigiriya is just a 20-minute drive from Habarana. We recommend starting early in the morning (before 8 AM) to avoid the heat and crowds.

Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
The Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, with a history spanning over 2,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site sits atop a massive rock and contains five caves filled with over 150 stunning Buddha statues and ancient paintings covering 2,100 square metres.
The temple was first used as a monastery by King Valagamba in the 1st century BC when he sought refuge from invaders. Over the centuries, successive kings expanded and decorated the caves with incredible artistry.
Inside the caves, you’ll see reclining, seated, and standing Buddha statues carved from rock and adorned with gold. The ceiling paintings depict scenes from the Buddha’s life and are remarkably well-preserved.
Dambulla is approximately 30 minutes from Habarana and can easily be combined with a Sigiriya visit for a perfect half-day cultural tour.

Anuradhapura Sacred Ancient City
Anuradhapura was the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For over 1,300 years, it served as the centre of Sinhalese civilization and Theravada Buddhism.
This vast UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to some of the most sacred Buddhist monuments in the world, including the Sri Maha Bodhi — the oldest documented tree on earth, grown from a branch of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
You’ll also see the magnificent Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, the towering Jetavanaramaya (once the third tallest structure in the ancient world), and the beautifully carved Moonstone at the Mahasena Palace.
Anuradhapura is approximately 1.5 hours from Habarana. We recommend a full-day guided tour. Modest clothing is required as this is an active religious site.

Polonnaruwa Medieval Capital
Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital and is one of the best-planned archaeological sites in South Asia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries under kings Vijayabahu I and Parakramabahu the Great.
The ruins are remarkably well-preserved and include the stunning Gal Viharaya — four magnificent Buddha statues carved directly into a granite rock face, considered some of the finest examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpture.
Other highlights include the impressive Royal Palace, the beautiful Vatadage (circular relic house), the ancient Audience Hall, and the massive Parakrama Samudra — an ancient reservoir that still irrigates farmland today.
Polonnaruwa is approximately 1 hour from Habarana. The site is best explored by bicycle (available for hire at the entrance).
